Important changes to the way calls to 08xx numbers are being charged

29th May 2015

From 1st July this year the way calls to 08xx numbers are charged is changing.

“The new system will introduce greater confidence by enabling organisations to say how much calls to them will cost.” – Ofcom

The cost of calling a service number (starting 08xx) will be made up of two clear parts:

  • An access charge. This goes to the caller’s telephone company (eg Orange, Sky, Virgin etc) and is charged as pence per minute.
  • A service charge. This is the cost of calling the number and is charged as pence per minute.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Review all your advertising You must ensure that your service charge is clearly displayed wherever you advertise or promote your 08xx number. The service charge should be prominent and in close proximity to the number itself. The recommended form of wording is:

Calls cost xp/min plus your phone company’s access charge.”

In another change happening at the same time, all 0800 numbers are being made free for to call from mobile phones, just as they usually are from landlines.

Planet Numbers will be charging 6p a minute for calls to customers 0800 numbers that originate from a mobile.
