Is Apple Creating a Self-Driving Car?

15th June 2017

According to Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook the answer is yes! There had been rumours about whether or not Apple’s Project Titan was looking into autonomous systems but following an interview with Bloomberg there is now official confirmation.

“We’re focusing on autonomous systems and clearly one purpose of autonomous systems is self-driving cars,” Tim Cook told Bloomberg, “[it’s] the mother of all AI projects […] probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on”. While Apple has been working on building its own car since 2014, they readjusted their plans and timescale last year to focus on developing the technology required for autonomous driving – a decision that has been reflected in the market, with Jaguar Land Rover, Fiat Chrysler and BMW being three car-makers that are also looking to expand into that market.

Meanwhile, Audi has also hinted at a reveal of a new car in July – the A8, which will feature semi-autonomous features. Jim Holder, editorial director of Autocar magazine, stated: “It’s still very unclear who is going to come out on top in this space […] it looks like they have realised they have to get into bed together to succeed”.
