Ofcom Introduce Plans For Bournemouth Residents

21st March 2012

People living in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch will soon have to dial the 01202 area code in order to make a local call, according to Ofcom’s new plans.

Subject to consultation, these proposed plans will come into effect on 1st November 2012 and from that date, all callers based in Bournemouth will have to prefix a local call with 01202.

The 01202 dial code, classed as ‘critical’ by Ofcom, has been rapidly running out of telephone numbers. To avoid having to change existing numbers, Ofcom hopes that by introducing this plan, it will safeguard the future supply of 01202 numbers.

Planet Numbers ran a quick survey on Twitter, to see what their Bournemouth and Poole followers felt of the plans. The general response was positive, with most people saying that, due to having to dial the area code when dialing from their mobile anyway, it had become a force of habit to do so from a landline too.

All information on these proposed plans can be found on Ofcom’s website: http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/geographic-telephone-numbers/?utm_source=updates&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=geographic-numbers-march12
