‘UK Calling’ – Ofcom Regulation Change Update

22nd June 2015

Back in April we explained that Ofcom were making some important changes to the way consumers will be charged for calling 08 numbers from within the UK. These changes are coming into effect on the 1st July 2015 so to make it a little clearer for everyone, we thought we’d try and explain these changes and how they will affect you and your business.

These changes apply to non-geographical numbers (NGN’s), to give the consumer a more informed choice and make telephone calls to NGN’s more transparent.

Firstly, all calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers will become free to call from any mobile or landline number (calls from mobiles are not currently free). This means that all consumers will be able to take advantage of your Freephone number, regardless of their service provider.

The charge to consumers for calls to 084, 087, 118 and 09 numbers will be split into two parts;

Access Charge – this is set by the consumer’s telephone provider

Service Charge – this is set by the company offering the NGN that the consumer dials.

This new charging system will apply to outbound calls from residential landlines and consumer owned mobile phones. Charges for calls made from business telephones to NGN’s will be set by your phone operator and may not be affected by these changes.

So now that you’re aware of these upcoming changes, what do you need to do? All media (both on and off line, including radio) that display an NGN must also display the charges for calling that number, preferably in a ‘calls cost x pence per minute plus your telephone provider’s access charge’ type manner.  Click here to find out the cost of any 084, 087 or 09 Service Charge.

Of course, if you want to appear as a caring and transparent business, we recommend that you use a Freephone number (just like us!). Why not give us a call (free of course!) on 08000 886 886 to discuss the new changes and how we can help you become compliant
